Flip Flops and Foot Health: What You Should Know This Summer

Summer is here, which means it’s time to break out the flip flops. While they’re perfect for the beach, pool, or a quick trip outside, wearing them too often can lead to more than just sore feet.

Your Feet Affect More Than You Think

Your feet are the foundation of your body. When they aren’t properly supported, it can create stress on your ankles, knees, hips, back, and even your neck.

Many flip flops and flat sandals offer little arch support or cushioning, forcing your feet to work harder with every step. Over time, this can contribute to common issues such as plantar fasciitis, heel pain, ankle discomfort, knee pain, and lower back pain.

Mix in Supportive Footwear

That doesn’t mean you need to ditch your favorite summer footwear. The key is moderation.

For longer walks, outdoor activities, or days spent on your feet, choose supportive sneakers or shoes that provide proper stability and cushioning. Alternating your footwear can go a long way toward preventing pain and injury while keeping your feet healthy throughout the summer.

Don’t Forget Your Socks

It’s also important to keep your feet healthy by changing into a fresh pair of socks daily. Clean, dry socks help manage moisture, reduce odor, and create a healthier environment inside your shoes during the hot summer months.

Enjoy Summer Without the Pain

By all means, wear those flip flops and enjoy the summer. Just don’t make them your full-time footwear.

If foot, ankle, knee, or back pain is keeping you from enjoying your favorite activities, Stoneking Physical Therapy & Wellness can help you get back on your feet and moving comfortably all season long.
