Two of the most commonly asked questions of us in physical therapy: ” Are the changes with aging inevitable?” and “what’s happening to me?” If you’re an older adult, which we categorize as 65 years of age or older, you’re probably asking yourself these same questions. Aside from the usual suspects of failing vision and hearing loss, which are usually correctable to some degree, there’s also a gradual loss of strength flexibility and balance as we age.

So what is truly happening?

Through the aging process, the body loses muscle fibers, which is called sarcopenia and the body loses bone density, known as osteopenia or osteoporosis. In addition, we a loss of water content which creates a loss of elasticity in our tissues which, in turn, creates a loss of flexibility.

All this news may seem discouraging, the good news is that physical activity of any kind can improve strength, range of motion, and balance. As we often say, sometimes maintaining is gaining! While physical therapy may not be the fountain of youth, we believe it is the next best thing!
