As someone approaching 69, I often find myself asking: What exactly is going on with my body? Over time, certain changes have crept in, some more noticeable than others. My hearing, for instance, began to decline several years ago, but with the help of hearing aids, I’ve regained much of what was lost. My vision has remained relatively stable with the help of contact lenses and a reliable pair of reading glasses. The most persistent issue? Low back discomfort and stiffness—a daily battle as I wrestle with gravity just to stay upright.
Still, I consider myself fortunate. Staying intellectually, socially, and physically active has helped me manage the aging process—if not with grace, then at least with resilience.
Along the way, I’ve come to understand that while certain health risk factors—like genetics, age, and chronic conditions—are beyond our control, many others are not. The choices we make every day can have a profound impact on how we age.
The fundamentals aren’t glamorous, but they work:
-
Avoiding smoking
-
Limiting alcohol (still figuring out what “moderate” really means!)
-
Eating a balanced, whole-foods-based diet
-
Exercising regularly
-
Managing stress wherever and however we can
It’s not always easy, and there’s no perfect formula. But these habits, practiced consistently, can dramatically improve your quality of life. They’re not just about adding years to your life—but adding life to your years.
