A note from Rich Stoneking…

Dancing is something that usually enters our lives at a young age and stays with us, in some form, into our senior years.

Dance lessons today are quite popular, especially among young girls who want to learn tap or become ballet dancers. Taking classes gives them the opportunity to meet new people, get exercise, and build confidence as they perform in recitals.

My first experience with dancing, however, did not occur under such “privileged” circumstances. As I recall, it took place at a junior high school dance held in the gymnasium. Girls on one side, boys on the other, all of us too nervous to break the ice and ask someone to dance. Awkward, to say the least.

By the time I reached high school, dances like the prom were attended with a date. These events were more formal and held at places like Cedar Gardens or Angeloni’s in Trenton and Hamilton Township. I know I’m dating myself, as these establishments no longer exist.

Once I was able to drive and got to college, my friends and I would usually make our way to fraternity parties and bars. Dancing was very informal, freestyle, and generally just an opportunity to strike up a conversation.

After college, there were weddings to attend and plenty of opportunities to dance. There were group dances like the “Conga” that got everyone onto the floor, and my least favorite, the “Macarena.”

Sometimes, as adults, we don’t need a special occasion to dance. Who hasn’t seen me swiveling my hips while listening to music in the therapy clinic? At one point, I even played “Who Stole the Kishka” after buying a polka CD.

Today, if you’re looking for a night out with live music and dancing, good luck. Lounges and clubs used to be packed, often filled with smoke, as smoking was common back then.

Recently, I was talking with a friend who asked where he could go for some Saturday night dancing. I had to tell him, unfortunately, that those opportunities are few and far between unless you’re willing to dance on your own.

We both agreed that today’s generation doesn’t know what it missed.

In the end, maybe the goal isn’t to find the perfect place to dance, but to keep dancing through life wherever the music finds you….

Did You Know? The United States has 4.6% of the world’s population but consumes 99% of the available hydrocodone and 80% of the opioids.

While pain is normal and acts as a warning system, living in pain is not. Drugs, especially for the long term, are rarely the answer, and surgery seldom comes with a 100% guarantee of symptom relief. Physical therapy, as the non-drug, non-surgical approach to wellness, may be just the answer to your needs.

The 4 most commonly asked questions in therapy are as follows:

Doc … What is wrong with me?

Doc … How long will it take to get better?

Doc … Is there anything I can do to help myself?

Doc … Is there anything you can do to help me?

To all these questions we have answers. Answers, that are reassuring and not negative. To quote a colleague, “effective reassurance is the best painkiller.” Please give therapy a try!

Combat the effects of the cold by establishing a moisturizing routine. Invest in a quality moisturizer and apply it generously to keep your skin supple and hydrated. Don’t forget the lips – a good lip balm is a winter essential. Experiment with textures and colors while keeping warm. A stylish coat, a cozy sweater, and a fashionable scarf can elevate your winter wardrobe and keep you snug in the process. While the average lifespan has increased due to pharmaceutical progress, the overall quality of life has dipped. At 65, half the population contends with five or more health conditions, compelling us to rethink our journey to a healthier tomorrow.

Notably, Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., with a significant gender bias—two-thirds of its victims are women. These statistics beckon us to reconsider how we approach health and well-being.

In this blog, we’ll explore the concept of a “healthier tomorrow,” considering a shift towards preventative healthcare. We’ll also discuss the prospect of doctors prescribing fewer medications while prioritizing the care of the body, proper nutrition, and disease prevention. Additionally, we’ll highlight the essential role of physical therapists and their contribution to holistic healthcare and second opinions.

In a world where our bodies demand regular exercise to stay healthy and strong, we often overlook another vital part of our anatomy that requires its own workout regimen – the brain. Much like a muscle, the brain thrives on stimulation, challenges, and consistent training to maintain its sharpness and agility. At Stoneking Physical Therapy and Wellness, we understand the importance of well-being, which extends beyond just the physical. Today, we delve into the fascinating concept of brain fitness and how you can keep those senior moments at bay through mental exercises inspired by the book “The Senior Moments Memory Workout.”

Have you ever heard the saying, “Use it or lose it”? This adage holds true for the brain as much as it does for any other muscle in our body. As we age, it’s common to experience moments of acute absentmindedness or fuzzy thinking – often humorously referred to as “senior moments.” These lapses in memory or focus can leave us frustrated and concerned about our cognitive health. That’s where the concept of brain fitness comes into play.

Just like lifting weights strengthens muscles, engaging in mental exercises strengthens neural pathways, enhances cognitive function, and improves memory retention. The brain is a dynamic organ, capable of creating new connections and adapting to challenges. By giving it the right exercises, we can promote its vitality and resilience, regardless of age.

As July marks National Golfer’s Month, it’s the perfect time to dive into a common golf-related injury: golfer’s elbow. Also known as medial epicondylitis, this condition affects not only avid golfers but also individuals engaged in other activities that involve repetitive wrist and forearm movements. Luckily, physical therapists are well-equipped to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of golfer’s elbow, allowing golf enthusiasts to get back on the course with confidence. In this article, we will explore what golfer’s elbow is, its causes, symptoms, and how physical therapy can play a crucial role in your recovery.

Golfer’s elbow is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in the tendons that connect the forearm muscles to the bony prominence on the inside of the elbow. While it’s commonly associated with golf, it can also result from other activities such as tennis, gardening, or repetitive hand movements. The condition is caused by repeated stress or overuse of the forearm muscles, leading to micro-tears and subsequent pain.

The most common symptom of golfer’s elbow is pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow, which can radiate down to the forearm and wrist. Activities like gripping, lifting, or flexing the wrist may worsen the pain. In some cases, individuals may experience weakness in the affected arm and difficulty with gripping objects.

Physical therapy plays a vital role in the management and rehabilitation of golfer’s elbow. When you seek assistance from a skilled physical therapist, you can expect a comprehensive approach tailored to your specific needs. Here’s how they can help:

Accurate Diagnosis: A physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation to accurately diagnose golfer’s elbow and rule out other potential causes of pain. This assessment may include examining your medical history, assessing your range of motion, strength, and identifying any biomechanical issues in your swing.

Pain Management: Physical therapists utilize various techniques to manage pain associated with golfer’s elbow. These may include manual therapy, such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, and modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation. They can also provide guidance on the use of ice or heat therapy to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

Rehabilitation Exercises: A personalized exercise program will be designed to address the specific needs of your elbow. Strengthening exercises will target the forearm muscles and improve their endurance, while flexibility exercises will restore the range of motion. Your physical therapist will guide you through proper technique and progress the exercises as you recover.

Technique Analysis and Modification: If your golfer’s elbow is related to your golf swing or any other repetitive activity, your physical therapist can analyze your technique and identify any flaws that may contribute to the condition. They can provide guidance on modifying your movement patterns to reduce stress on the affected tendons, preventing future injuries.

Education and Injury Prevention: Physical therapists are passionate about empowering individuals with knowledge. They will educate you on ergonomics, proper body mechanics, and preventative measures to minimize the risk of re-injury. They can also recommend appropriate warm-up and stretching routines to prepare your muscles for activity.

Golfer’s elbow can be a frustrating setback for golf enthusiasts and those engaged in repetitive forearm movements. However, with the help of a skilled physical therapist, you can overcome this condition and get back to swinging with confidence. Through a combination of pain management techniques, tailored exercise programs, technique analysis, and injury prevention strategies, physical therapists can guide you towards a full recovery.

Whenever you are exercising or rehabilitating in therapy, have you ever wondered how that other person keeps going while you are burnt out? Turns out the answer can be fairly simple: sleep. Sleep is the number one recovery technique for mind and body. Mikaela Shiffrin, world class downhill skier, gets 9-10 hours of sleep a night, trying to go to bed between 8:30 and 9:00 at night. Lebron James is known for getting 10-12 hours sleep every night.

In a nutshell, sleep reenergizes our bodies on a cellular level. An influx of cerebrospinal fluid washes into the brain during sleep, clearing away harmful waste proteins like a dishwasher – which explains why scientists recently have linked chronic sleep deprivation to Alzheimer’s and dementia (both attributed to a buildup of plaque in the brain). Sleep supports emotional drive and motivation, the ability to learn and remember, and even controls our appetite and libido (sex drive).

As simple as it may seem, getting a consistent, good night sleep can be difficult. Consistency is the key. Keeping an irregular sleep schedule will knock you off your natural circadian rhythm, things are going to be seriously disrupted, and then, in turn will impair performance. Is there anything more important than being at your best sleep wise while recovering from an injury or surgery?

While there is no magic number that determines how much sleep you need, most adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. This amount of sleep allows for 3-5 full cycles of REM (rapid eye movement) or deep sleep.

To prepare yourself for sleep, establish a bedtime that will allow you the 7-9 hours of rest before having to awaken. If possible avoid exercise prior to bedtime, separate yourself from bright light and blue light emitting devices (e.g. computer or cell phone screen), lower the bedroom temperature between 60-65 degrees, and consider eyeshades, earplugs, white noise machines, humidifiers, and/or a fan. For myself, bedtime is 9-9:30 for a wakening time of 5:00 a.m. The bedroom is completely dark, a fan is used for white noise, and the thermostat is set at 65 degrees. The things I can do better are not eating or drinking alcohol close to bedtime. While not perfect, this bedtime ritual works well for me. Hopefully what I have said will help you attain a more restful sleep and improve your physical and mental performance. Good luck!

For those battling loneliness and isolation, coming to therapy and making friends with others can have a curative effect. Many is the time that patient’s establish friendships with fellow patients looking forward to their meetings in therapy.

Patients have even gone so far as to schedule their appointment times to coincide with their new found friends. Physical therapy, especially in an open atmosphere such as our clinic, encourages patient interaction. To quote one of our older (87 y.o.) patients, “Sometimes I’m not sure if I want to go out, but when I come back home, I feel I’ve had a good morning. It’s nice to meet other people like myself, but especially to meet the younger folks who are so respectful. I always come back feeling positive and encouraged”.

From my observations, the shared laughter and camaraderie creates a feeling of being valued, listened to, and that you matter. A well-known Harvard University study that tracked 724 people over their entire adult lives clearly determined that social relationships was the best prediction of a person’s long-term physical and emotional well-being. In a nutshell, it is the quality of relationships and not the quantity that matters most.
